…EVERY 6 SECONDS A WOMAN OR CHILD IN CANADA IS SEXUALLY ASSAULTED.
Dear Friend,
Are you a parent, grandparent, sibling, child, partner, friend or colleague? If so, someone you care about may already have been impacted by sexual violence. Sexual violence impacts people’s lives in many ways, unfortunately a high number of victims don’t know that help is available. For 27 years the Newfoundland & Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis & Prevention Centre has been providing non-judgmental support and essential services to anyone affected by sexual violence.
…from September 2002 – September 2003 your Centre received a total of 3,752 calls; 1,414 of these calls were women, men and children in crisis due to sexual violence.
When a victim of sexual violence calls the crisis line we are often the first person they confide in. Our volunteers are trained to listen, support, supply information, short-term one to one support, and provide accompaniment through hospital, police and court procedures.
Violence is a problem in our province. As a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador it may surprise you to know that according to Statistics Canada in 2001 our province had the highest rate of sexual assault offences in all of the Atlantic Provinces and Ontario.
…1 in 4 women are victims of rape or attempted rape in a dating situation. The majority of these women are teenagers.
The Newfoundland & Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis & Prevention Centre has been working hard to provide prevention and awareness workshops to young people across the province through schools and community organizations. 75% of workshop participants stated that our presentations provided them with information that they had not previously been taught by teachers, parents, or friends. As a community organization we feel that our work with youth is vital. As an anti-violence organization we recognize that prevention and the ultimate eradication of sexual violence can only be achieved through awareness and education.
…your sexual assault crisis centre is one of the most under-funded sexual assault centres in the country.
Due to funding restraints and geographic barriers it is increasingly difficult for us to provide victims of sexual assault with adequate services throughout the province, we are particularly challenged in our efforts to reach out to communities in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. We have made great strides with our awareness campaigns and outreach programs; however, there is much more work to be done.
What can you do to help? Your support is important to us. Financial contributions from the community will help us continue in our work to eradicate sexual violence and to provide valuable services to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, regardless of where they live. Thank you for considering this request and contributing to the continued existence of this province’s only sexual assault centre.
